What is now known as the "Slovenian Cultural Garden" was originally dedicated as the Jugoslav Garden on 4 December 1932 and was formally opened on 15 May 1938.
The Jugoslav Cultural Gardens Club was custodian of the garden for many years. In 1954, the club was dissolved and its officers asked the American Slovene Club to take over the sponsorship of the garden. The American Slovene Club was a Slovenien Women's Group whose purpose is the perpetuation of Slovenian culture, heritage, history, and education.
In 1991, Slovenia was recognized as an independent country when it seceded from Jugoslavia. The American Slovenian Club worked with TCCGF and city officials to have the garden name changed. On 21 June 1995 by city ordinance, the garden was renamed the Slovenian Cultural Garden. Soon after the name was officially changed, the Slovenian Cultural Garden Association was formed and took over the sponsorship of the garden.
